probably the most common and expensive).  So in order to
get from place to place and to pull their wagon they needed
a good sturdy horse.  The Draft Horses had the bulk they
needed but the size and amount of food needed was a bit
too much for the Gypsy to efficiently use.  The next
problem encountered was they developed a small black
horse, but the Navy/Army would steal them and use them

combat so they could sneak attack at night.  So the Gypsies
then bred for the color and flash that are the Gypsy Cobs
today.  So they selectively bred until they got the ultimate
horse which is the current day Gypsy.  It is a horse that is

Irish Cob, Gypsy Horse, Gypsy place, are very people
oriented, rarely get sick, good Vanner, among MANY other
names) is a breed of horse that has been bred and raised by
the Gypsies in England and Ireland for well over a hundred
years.  The Gypsies are traveling people that have a house
on wheels in the form of a wagon (traditional bow top is
probably the most common and expensive).  So in order to
get from place to place and to pull their wagon they needed
a good sturdy horse.  The Draft Horses had the bulk they
needed but the size and amount of food needed was a bit

that is bred to push the wagon from place to place, are very
people oriented, rarely get sick, good strong feet, docile
temperment, and the flash that Gypsies are known for.  This
is all because the Gypsies selectively bred for these horses,
only the best would be used to carry on the genetics, sub par
horses would be traded away.  The Gypsy people breed for
the best all around horse whice must include the most
feather, mane, tail and the best breeding horses (horses that
reproduce themselves over and over again).  They have
annual fairs with the largest being Appleby in June of every
year where they go and show off their best horses and try to
get bid profit.
Gypsies currently come in MANY colors with Black and
White being the most common.  One look around Desert
Jewel Gypsy Horses and you will see they also come in
Bay, Silver Dapple, Chesnut, Grey, Black Sabino,
Buckskin, Palomino, Pearl, among others and of course all
of the above in the tobiano pattern (bay & white, buckskin
& white, etc).  The Gypsy is a great all around horse that
can do everything from mow lawns to ride to drive to even
be in the Rose Parade!  There are probably somewhere over
7500 Gypsy Cobs in the US right now so they are definitely
becoming more prominent here.  If you are looking for a
good, colorful, sturdy, fun horse look no further than the
Gypsy Cob!  Shiredale Farm is home to 2 Gypsy Cob fillies,
Kahlua (a buckskin and white) and Dinah (a black and
white).
My Favorite Gypsies!
Johnny-My first Gypsy horse and he sure did not disapoint!  A son of the immortal Lottery Horse he has the typical Vine's stamp (the Vine's
family is his breeder and this was the type he looked to produce when breeding Lottery, he wanted horses that would take the image of
themselves and stamp it on their offspring) of being average size, very elegant and classy and a fine example of the breed.  He with lots of the
good Gypsy traits (conformation, hair, great personality, sweet head, etc).   He is now owned by Desert Jewel Gypsy Horses and is currently in
Minnesota getting ready to become a Expo horse (go to Horse Expo's)
Saoirse- One of my favorite Gypsy mares, this is Saoirse, she is a BEAUTIFUL tri-color (bay and white) filly currently owned by Desert Jewel
Gypsy Horses..  She is a three year old by Bullseye who is a son of Bob and by a chesnut and white mare named Soverign.  She is just SO
pretty, she is everything I look for in a Gypsy.  Could not have drawn better markings myself!  She is a BEAUTIFUL girl and will be one to
watch in the future!  Her plus Romeo could equal some AMAZING babies! A special thanks to Deirdre at Clononeen Farm for this amazing
mare of Jen's!
Dinah- What can I say about Dinah?  She is everything I look for in a Gypsy and then some.  In the pictures (and currently) she is only a
coming 2 year old.  I can not wait to see her grow into herself even more and become a phenomenal mare that we know she is bound to!  She
will be the new show horse and carries a lot of the characteristics that the Gypsies look for in their horses.  Well known breeder Tom Price
came to Desert Jewel's Open House and Dinah was one of his favorites of the whole farm.  She is an extrodinary filly and can't wait to see
what is in store for this phenomenal young girl!
Kahlua- Kahlua is one that caught my eye from the beginning as she is just SUCH a pretty girl and happens to be my favorite color pattern
(buckskin and white).  Over time she became the sweetest horse and I just couldn't bear to think of not seeing her pretty sweet face with her
tongue hanging out ever again, so I decided to add her to my herd.  She is a coming yearling filly and is just as sweet as can be and has a TON
of hair also for her age!  She has the best personality I have seen in a Gypsy and is just the ultimate package!
