BFS Alfie's Annie

Black Shire Filly
Annie is a beautiful Black Shire mare that I got from BFS before they
closed their doors.  She unfortunately has a rare condition called kyphosis
(curvature of the rare condition called kyphosis (curvature of the
spine/roach back) and no one is quite sure what causes it yet.  It could be
genetics, it could be environment, it could be an injury, and it could be any
combination of the above.  Simply put little is known about what causes it
above.  Simply put little is known about what causes it and there is no cure.
I agreed to take Annie and give her a home as she won't be used for
breeding in case there is a genetic link, and it would be unfair to her to put
weight via riding or driving on her spine, so she is simply a pet and will live
out her days playing with her 1/2 sister Avril.  After Annie's arrival, I noted
swelling in her left hock, and had our vet take a look at her, and after doing
two shots of X-rays to confirm our belief's, she has OCD in her left hock.
She is not painful and has great flexion so the Vets agree she doesn't need
surgery on it, so again she will just be a pet here at Shiredale and will be
loved for as long as she is here!  Welcome Annie!
Below are some photos of Annie's first summer in Arizona.  Clearly she faded, a LOT! She stands 16 hands, which isn't that small but is
small compared to her 1/2 sister Avril since they are only 3 months apart in age.  Enjoy the new photos, unfortunately her ribs will almost
always show in her mid body due to the curvature of her spine.
